Eva is inside her pink cat. The marigold lady.

This is my contribution, another mixed media work and a watercolor sketch, to Kristin’s ‘Summer of Color’ where the running color combination is hot pink and orange.

As I did in my last post, this week also I have been trying to visualize the short stories of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, though with what level of success this time, I am not so sure.

The story is ‘Eva is Inside Her Cat’ and like in all the writings of Marquez there is a strong element of unreality, mysteriousness and to me, a sense of wonder.

The pretty girl, Eva, kills herself to be free of the burden of her own beauty and the consequence of a psychosis where she feels her blood is full of insects that run out at night. She feels an overwhelming desire to eat oranges from the tree under which is buried the boy who loved her but she realizes she has no body to taste the fruit and so enters the body of the family cat. Only then does she understand that everything had changed and three thousand years had passed since she first desired to eat an orange.

Though the metaphorical context connects Eva with Eve, the orange with the Forbidden Apple, what appealed to me is the visual I had of this girl in the body of a cat looking at the orange tree.

I used a bit of packing cardboard and let the fringe of thin sponge stay on. Layering it with numerous colors I tried to bring in the atmosphere of supernaturalism, at the same time humanizing it with a girls face for the cat. I have created a rather strange looking pink cat and orange tree!

A sketch I did for the color theme of pink and orange, this Indian lady in bright orange sari with marigolds in her hair.

Who is she waiting for?

I had a great time last week with the colors of citron green and turquoise and the fantastic entries! Each entry looked great and unique.

Here’s hoping all of you have a great week of color!

  1. Hi Zafaran. A very original image, and it is so interesting to read of the inspiration for the painting.
You say that the cat and tree are strange, but so they should be in a surreal and supernatural setting. I love it, and the idea of painting a lade with a pink and orange sari.

  9. WOW, beautiful post especially the mythical story :). Gorgeous rendition of that too, with beautiful mixed media cat & orange tree piece. The lady in saree is so sweet. I have seen many Indian ladies wearing gorgeous sarees here in Kuala Lumpur, live very near to Little India town as well...so I might go visit their pretty shops soon. Thanks for the inspiration!.
