Indomitable Kali

The strength of women, often underestimated, rises above the callousness and abusiveness meted out by society.

Indian mythology depicts the super strength of women through Goddess Kali. She is skull garlanded, brandishing severed heads of the demons she slayed, baleful eyes, dark skinned, hair flying wildly, having several arms and standing in a posture of defiance, fearlessness. As a Destroyer of Evil, source of Eternal Energy, she is a Mother Goddess, a clear picture of a woman who fights refuses to give up.

The Kali I have painted tries to show the spirit of rebellion against atrocities towards women, especially in the light of the case of the 23-year-old New Delhi girl who was gang raped in a moving bus last week. So many other cases from all over the country have since been reported. Vociferous protests are going on all over the country seeking harsh penalty for the criminals.

I salute the strength of the brave girl and numerous others like her worldwide who continue to show courage even through times when their whole life has fallen apart. I pray for more strength and Kali like courage in times of trauma.

Maya Angelou says it best with the lines,
“You can write me down in history with hateful, twisted lies, you can tread me in this very dirt, but still, like dust, I'll rise.”

  12. Yes Tammie, I think you're right. It might do us all good to paint Kali. Celebrate her and her strength. Wouldn't it be an amazing experience to have a Goddess Kali art day on which we all post an artistic representation of her and share what she means to us?

Za faran, brilliant post and very appropriate to bring Goddess Kali in with your discussion about the rape victim and the many others like her. I hadn't read about this incident; your post reminds me to connect with the greater world. The rape victim's story (and those that share her story) brings me to tears. Your beautiful and strong Kali rallies my heart.

I don't know much about Goddess Kali, and it was only yesterday I was doing a little more research on her because from what I understand she is often misrepresented as a negative. Creator, preserver, destroyer--a powerful Goddess and mysterious.

Also, I appreciate the Maya Angelou quote you shared, "You can write me down in history with hateful, twisted lies, you can tread me in this very dirt, but still, like dust, I'll rise." And then your powerful and strong representation of Goddess Kali.

Thank you for this well written and beautiful post shared with Sunday Sketchers.

  19. Words are needed; Words seem difficult; Words and Positive Power must strike back at those who commit such hienious crimes; Justice must prevail. My heart aches for that young woman and all the other victims before and after her. There must not be any more after her. Your art is a powerful symbol of what is needed. Bravo!
